Woody Plant Recommendations For Moisture-Retentive Soil

Hello Folks -

I am in dire need of getting advice for a variety of woody ornamentals that might thrive in a special place in my North Carolina Zone 7A garden. I have a fairly large area that is highly moisture retentive. It does not drain well at all. The soil is grayish-yellow in color. It appears as if it would be great for pottery clay. The locals here call it "buck tallow."

I have no real spatial limitations as this is a large area. It gets mostly full sun.

Thank you so much for any recommendations you may have.
