anemone de caen Help!

Posted by andreap z7 NC (My Page) on

I planted some bulbs about a month and a half ago and now have beautiful foliage, some of it 4" tall. Will it survive hard freezes? I know they are supposed to be hardy to our zones (I'm in Durham NC) but is the foliage hardy after sprouting? Or should I dig and pot them up inside for the winter? Or Cover them with leaves?
Thanks!

They'll be fine. Sometimes the tips of the leaves get fried by strong freezes but it has no affect on spring blooms. The flower buds can also get burnt by hard freezes in the spring but they have a long bloom period so any new buds will be fine. They are tough and completely hardy here.

I agree with John. My best bulbs were bought at a Wallmart 20+ years ago, and I have divided and moved many of them. They are early bloomers, coming up in December, usually, and often have snow on them during bloom time...and they never miss a beat.

But some of my Trilliums are up, one with a bud, and I am worried about them. We are like Mothers, worrying about our "babies!"
