sweet bush(california allspice)

My husband comes from Kentucky and the bush is known as the Bubby Bush. We now live in Florida, can the bush survive here?
The flowers on the bush are a Maroon color, and the perfume is out of this world. I come from England and I have never smelt ot seen anything like it!
I have tried to get the plant at the stores and I cannot find it, can someone help me?
I hope someone can help me.
Thank you,
Chrissie

Try looking for it using the botanical name: Calycanthus floridus. The cultivar 'Michael Lindsey' is especially fragrant.

Other common names for it include "sweetshrub" and "Carolina allspice".

PS about Florida

It is native to the more northern parts of Florida.

Here is a link that might be useful: Florida range

I don't know how it will do that far south, but it's also easy to grow from seed. You might want to hit the exchange forum. Several people should have it. I just sent out the last of my seeds this morning.

It suckers as well, and can easily be propagated by removing one of the suckers.

I picked on up last spring at our local farmer's market for $3 in a gallon pot. Not sure if you have one where you live, I have had very good luck finding interesting plants at the market here (Gaston County)

I planted one of these three years ago. It's about 4 feet tall now, but it still hasn't bloomed for me!
