I need to thin out the canopy on my sugartyme crabapple, can I remove crossing branches and water sprouts now, or should I wait until the worst of the freeze is over?

well. I just answered my own question.

from an article at ncsu extension website:
"Pruning should begin as late in the winter as possible to avoid winter injury."
