Remove leaf mulch?

The leaf mulch is only a few inches thick at this point (at the most). I have crocuses, irises, and daylilies (as well as a few other things) trying to poke through, here in the Piedmont Triad. Do I need to remove the leaf mulch, or leave it for longer? Do I remove it at all, or just let it continue to break down?

Just let it continue to break down. Those plants know how to get through it if it is just a few inches thick. And in our area, organic material degrades pretty quickly. Plus it provides nutrients to the plants and soil.

People that garden in really cold regions sometimes remove mulch to let the soil warm up in the early Spring - so you will see that advice out there. We're a bit warmer then they are so you don't have to and as it breaks down it feeds the soil.
