Hot Slope in Front Yard-- Need Cheap Fix Ideas

Our new place is atop a hill. The front yard has lots of long needle pines at the bottom and some oak, etc.. the top half is nearly bare with just a bit of weeds, apparently the ground is red-mainly sandy.

I have an erosion problem and need to solve it as cheaply as possible with something that I don't have to mow.

I think this area will get pretty hot it is a south facing slope.

Ideas?
