New to this zone, need help!

I recently moved from a zone 5 to a zone 8, here in Charleston, South Carolina. This is a huge change for me and I really have no idea about the rules down here, and need to learn the basics! Here's my situation: I will be planting a container garden, since I am renting a home and can't really dig up their landscaping. I can't bear to not garden this year, so containers it is! I would love to grow vegetables, perennials and a few pots of arrangement (cutting) flowers. It's March, and is starting to get warm already. So I guess I should start planting my vegetables? If you could suggest the best kind to grow in containers and when to plant them that would be great! Also, the easiest growing perennials and arrangement flowers that grow down here in these hot summers! Thanks!
