Carpenter Bee Courtship

I didn't want to put too many pics on one thread, so here's another.

Sat. in the heat there were carpenter bees flying around everywhere, buzzing and challenging everything and trying to court females.

This female was feeding on a verbena when a male approached her.

However, she didn't seem very impressed, and kept on doing what she was doing:

He really tried to woo her.

But to no avail.

A male does a complicated dance where he flies up to the female, slowly flies backward, then suddenly whizzes to another spot (like Clark Kent) and repeats. Other courtships end more happily, as there are many carpenter bees around, or she may have felt differently later in the day.
