Live Oak - Recommendations and Sources

Hi Folks -

I am looking for recommendations for evergreen oaks that would do well for me here in the western Piedmont of N.C. (Forsyth County). Does Quercus virginiana succeed here? I hope so because it is my favorite.

For those familiar with this location, have you seen all of the evergreen oaks at the Chili's restaurant on Stratford Road? Are they Quercus virginiana?

I would like to know sources of your recommendations that are of decent size so that I can enjoy them a little more as they grow.

I have tried twice with this tree. Ultimately, the ice storms killed them. I am slightly north of Greensboro, so I am in your same zone. The trees flourished as long as we did not have long stints of very cold and icy weather. They could not tolerate having ice stay on the limbs for very long. One of my trees was about 12', but the other was smaller. I also love this tree and am sorry that I cannot recommend it for our area.

As for obtaining trees, Piedmongt Carolina Nursery found mine for me.

It's used occasionally here in Charlotte as a street tree and shade tree in commercial settings.
Probably takes 50 or more years for a live oak to develop that spreading majesty that we usually see in Old South photographs.
