carnation

I bought a pot of perennial carnation from Walmart yesterday. These are like the ones in bouquets - large size flowers. There's not much info about how to plant them, except that they should be planted with some lime.

Anyone here grows them? Any special tips? Will they grow in amended clay soil or should I just grow them in pots? What potting soil, if in pots?

and if in the ground, then how should I prepare the soil before planting? In full sun or in shade? I live in Durham, NC.
