Carla, you'll love the downtown! Be sure to take time to go thru Reedy River Park; it's glorious!
For dinner, there's a very nice (and slightly pricey) restaurant on Brown Street, just around the corner from Main, that has wonderful food and usually has someone playing some tunes on the piano. There are other great non-franchise places for dinner in that area but many are even pricier.
For lunch, I like the French cafe right on Main (Bistro Europa); they have good salads or sandwiches and great desserts!
Keep an eye out for all the little mice hidden here and there along the street and check out the old-time candy at The Mast General Store.

American Grocery downtown near the ballfield has been getting good reviews on some other message boards and everyone loves 33 Liberty, though it is not in downtown. I've read good and bad about High Cotton, that is down in the West End (sister restaurant to the one in Charleston). There is a new Indian restaurant called Handi that I've been wanting to try. I also like Chicora Alley, which is in the West End as well.

If you like ice cream, don't miss Luna Rose gelato in W Washington St next to Wild Wings. Just writing about it makes me want to leave work and go there!!

If you are further afield, Fonda Rosalindas on S Pleasantburg around the corner from the Fresh Market is a great Mexican restaurant that is definitely different from the typical "beans and cheese" places all over Greenville.

I really want to go to Blue Fire Grill for my next special dinner. It looks fab on the website.
