Understand that I do not approve of the "green" word advertising thing GW started doing and have quit posting for the most part. So if it appears I had nothing to do with it! I did want to help you a bit with the onions. First of all, if you are doing seeds, you should plant them inside in a large deep tray in January or February. Seed selection should be for short day or day neutral, "southern" varieties. Then transplant them outside when possible in March. That way you avoid the weed issue. Otherwise, in the spring, buy plants-not sets-if you want the best results. If you want "green onions", which I consider a waste of a good onion, then plant them deep about 3 inches. If you want big bulbs, plant no more than an inch deep. At the top you are seeing the flower and seed producing head. I always break that off when I first see it so the energy goes to producing the bulb. As the bulbs form, use a hose to wash away dirt from the bulbs. Gauge your plants by the bulb diameter. The green shoots will dry up and turn brown when they are ready to be pulled..Caution here, if it is really raining alot, they might rot if they get too wet for too long at this stage. Some never get all the way brown for me. Store in your garage with lots of air space to dry them. Hope this helps.
