I've done it! Most plug suppliers require minimum orders that the casual gardener can't meet, but for a garden club or group of buyers it works out well. I bought from an outfit in Florida and they had many assorted trays which made it more do-able.

Sometimes the plants are very tiny, sometimes they are way overgrown and you need to move them up right away. I view it all kinda like winter sowing, it is easy to get overwhelmed with a lot of transplanting work.

My experience echoes John's. Over time I've moved away from buying too many multiples because you've got to do something with all of them at once. Invariably I get too many of one kind for the kind of gardening I do which requires diversity for pest control since I don't use chemicals.

IMO it works best for things like annuals if you want quick color or grasses and ground covers where you need to cover a large area. YMMV. RJ

I generally sow in the 72 and 144 flats so I definitely resonate with the idea that it could get overwhelming. It can take an entire day (if you work non-stop) to transplant four flats. Maybe I'm just slow though lol. I have considered moving up to the larger six cell or even nine cell packs but I have such a small greenhouse and the small cells allow me to plant so much more at once. It especially helps save space with plants that have unreliable or long germination times. If I could order trays that had multiple varieties in them, that would definitely be ideal and save me some time. I don't mind the work but I definitely do want to keep away from the whole monoculture thing because I very very rarely use any type of chemical. And even then it is usually out of sheer frustration when I have allowed things to get too far out of hand. And.. I almost always end up regretting it. I think what I dislike the most about using those small trays is getting them filled with medium and actually sowing the seed.. lol. I know that is silly but it's a tedious job.
