Plant Delights open house

Are you going to the open house? The weather is going to be low 70's, just right for garden viewing. If you are interested in nursery hopping, check out Plant Logic in Julian. (No, I am not affiliated with either but do enjoy both)

Can't go this Saturday. Isn't it open next weekend too? I am planning to check that out and (if so)go then. I have no kids next weekend so it would be more fun for me. Have a great time though! Aren't the gardens alone worth it?! -Ais.

Which part of the gardens can you look at there? The houses confuse me as to where the public is supposed to wander.

Directions to Plant Logic in Julian please. I may go to PD or even BB this weekend. After this week at work, I may just sleep in but it would be nice to have directions in case I get motivated!

Alicia, as long as you don't go past the way outer laying greenhouses I think you're okay. I've usually go alone and wander around wherever. I'm the one trying to figure out what all the trees and shrubs are. LOL

I haven't been to the PD open house in a few years...I think I'm definitely going to go, especially with the cool, cloudy weekend. Ought to be perfect.

Miguel, looks like Julian is right near Climax...*grin*. That's up your way, right? This pages lists a Plant Logic Nursery & Garden, so it must exist...

    http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/hort_sci/hscareerncco.html

Why in the world would a place be so hard to find? There's no information about it on the internet that I can scrounge up. Weird.

Blue Angel, thanks to the directions to Plant Delights. I have directions there and have been several times in the past but what I would really like are directions to Plant Logic.

Brian, good to see you again via cyberspace. I also have attempted to google and search for Plant Logic and could come up with info like you did--that it exists but not where it is. I may have to see if I can find a phone number and call for directions since no one seems to be able to post info about it here!

Hope your clematis viorna is still doing well!

Miguel, it's doing just fine, already as tall as I am with buds on it. Dang, now my interest is really piqued about this Plant Logic place! Oh well, I can survive with PD and BB _I guess_... :)

Where in the world have you been hanging out, here or that other garden site, gardenbuddies? I can't remember the name. Anyway, good to see you around.

Plant Logic. The number is (336) 317-0138. The 411 is it's a small backyard operation. I hope it's OK to give that number out, but we're good people here. I think... :)

where did you guys get the clematis viorna? i had one, loved it and it didn't come back a few yrs ago and would like to get another.

T, mine came up, by itself in the middle of my back yard. I noticed it a few years ago as I was about to run over it with the lawnmower (noticed it just in time, that is!). I sent a bloom off to get identified at the NCSU herbarium, and when they told me what it was, I cordoned it off and let it grow up a tree trunk for a couple of years, then last year (*gulp*) I decided to move it. When I saw shoots emerge from the ground in the spring, I dug it up with the biggest rootball I could manage, and moved it inside a flowerbed, where I whipped together a little bamboo "trellis", and this is where it's been for 2 years now...it came up before that last cold snap (and didn't flinch), and now it's over the top of the bamboo thing, taller than me. I love it...and feel lucky to have it.

Tammy I think I might have gotten some seeds for Clematis viorna from the NC Botanical Garden this spring. If I get any seedlings I'll bring you one. Unfortunately I have not yet had the best luck growing clematis from seed. I think I keep the medium too wet and the seeds rot.

I may try to run over to Plant Delights this weekend to take pictures. Also want to go to Hosta Farm, west of Pittsboro, on 64.

Possibly meet some of you guys at one or both of these places.

Evelyn I did get your directions but after I went to work. I emailed you separately so you should see the email later this morning. Just got off work at 3am hence the late email. I also hope you don't mind that I supply Brian and any others interested the directions you gave me to Plant Logic.

From Greensboro take 421 South. Continue South down towards the Julian area. There is an exit ramp that says Hwy 62 Julian/Climax. Going south on 421 you get off the exit and take a right on 62. Plant Logic is maybe a 1/4 mile on the left. You go over some railroad tracks to get to it.

Brian glad to hear your viorna is doing well. I have two now. One from cuttings from a plant near the house at Salem Lake, the second from a seller on eBay several years ago.

Tamelask, I supplied Dan Long at Brushwood Nursery (www.gardenvines.com) and Ellen Hornig at Seneca Hills Perennials with tons of seed from the wild colony of plants I discovered at Salem Lake. Dan has seedlings up already and hopes to have them for sale this fall or next spring at the latest. I haven't heard how Ellen is doing with her seedlings but I am sure you could check with both to find out when they may have plants available.

Alicia, realize that clematis viorna may take a year or more to germinate so don't give up on the seeds too soon.

I double checked the Hwy62 exit sign and it says Burlington/High Point. Go by it everyday so I really never pay attention to it...lol. Anyway....go towards High Point. The rest of the directions are correct.
    Enjoy!

thank you all so much for advice on where to find viorna and the offer, alicia. it is one f my all timefavorites- i adore the form. mine never set seed or i'd have collected it. i have had trouble sprouting clematis seed, too.

found out this year by accident that perhaps i've been keeping my medium too wet for optimal germ of stuff, too. my medium was moist, but i'd been watering it from the bottoms once i planted stuff before ii put the clear lids on. anyhow, i forgot or didn't get around to it with about 6 trays and they germinated much faster than the ones i'd watered. that would only work with the hot caps, as it kept the humidity high. with stuff that takes a long time to germinate, it's hard to keep the level just right. anyhow, thanks again! tam

Tamelask, if you like the form of viorna, see the thread below where I have shown other native US clematis and how they look. These natives are the often forgotten ones, although the British have been growing them and hybridizing with them even moreso than anyone here in the US.

thank you so much, nckvilledudes!! any ideas where some of those can be had? some look like ringers for viorna to me. i love that fat little on at the top. it's really cool that a lot of those are us natives- i like natives and try to plant them when i can. i think of all the flower shapes, bells are my very favorite, and i love vines. and that's saying something because i have a lot of faves- lol. i had my viorna growing up through a rose and it did just ok for probably 5 years. only a few blooms each year. hopefully it'll do better when i get it again. i like them scrambling through things, too.

first time i ever saw it was up at mt pisgah inn, behind where the one trail starts they have some growing through brambles. love at first sight! had to i.d. it and was tickled when i found a source back then.

i've bought a few of the lower bushy types from pdn in the past couple of years that have sort of bell flowers, but they're not as elegant as viorna to my eye. thanks again! tam

Tamelask, glad you enjoyed the pictures. Following are sources for the clematis pictured.

Fusca, pitcheri, and crispa can be purchased from Ellen Horning at Seneca Hill Perennials. She also has texensis which I didn't post a picture of previously but which is stunning.

    http://www.senecahillperennials.com/index.php?page=clematis

Here is another picture of fusca from last year although I think it is actually fusca violacea since the straight fusca should be a hairy brown shaped bell and not have the purple tinge.

Picture of my texensis from last year---

The pitcheri hybrid can be purchased from Dan Long at Brushwood Nursery.

    http://www.gardenvines.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=1&keywords=pitcheri

Glaucophylla can be purchased at Sunlight Gardens but they are out of stock and not available until 2008.

    http://www.sunlightgardens.com/pages/1334.html

Versicolor is available at Woodlanders Nursery. They also have C. socialis which they have a picture of on their website but don't do mail order on it!

Sorry but I couldn't do direct image linking for the links but you should do okay copying and pasting them into your browser's address window.

    Enjoy!!!

Rootdigger, glad you liked it. It is available from Seneca Hills Perennials and Dan at Brushwood was also carrying it but you would need to check to see if it is still available from him now.

One other plant I forgot to post was an addisonii I got from Plant Delights. They still had some yesterday when I went to their open house. The picture on the website however is way too red compared to the real color the flower sepals have.
