John has some and while we've been house/garden/pet sitting we've been nibbling a few. To me, they taste a lot like the autumn olives. I use those for syrup. It's closely related. They are just a tad bit bigger, but if you have the autumn olive growing near you i probably wouldn't bother.
Thanks Tammy, I have read that goumi though related is not invasive like the Autumn Olive. That's one thing I've never grabbed at any of our swaps due to that issue. I just don't have the room nor the energy to fight it. I think I might like to try one of the cultivar goumis.
Since it's everywhere hereabouts i assumed it was the same out your way. But if you don't have it around, i'd get a goumi. I'm a bit skeptical that it isn't invasive, tho, since birds like those fruit, too.
This year they have an impressive crop of berries but in years past they were not worth growing. The flavor is something you need to do something with - eaten out of hand they taste pretty much like autumn olive, kinda sour and tangy. Made into syrup they are mighty good.
They root easily from cuttings. I have two types, got one to be the pollinator for the other (which has bigger berries) but the wild autumn olives are doing the job for me.
