What's eating my Eupatorium Chocolate

My Eupatorium Chocolate is coming up nicely but I noticed just 2 days ago that something is eating on the leaves. There are holes all in the leaves and it was like it just started overnight. I've looked at the leaves and I can't see any bugs at all but the holes are in the middle of the leaves not on the edges. What could this be?

There are both caterpillars and beetles that eat leaves of Eupatorium (and probably numerous other pests). Some of them crawl up and eat during the dark of night. You would have to create a barrier to stop them from finding or scaling the main stem. More than likely they are hiding in the mulch or leaf litter around the base of the plants.
