Phlox divaricata (woodland phlox) prune? shear?

I know this has seed and spreads underground also, but it looks like I need to shear it or at least prune out the dry-looking part with the seeds. In the three years or so I have had a small bed, I haven't noticed the seed "doing anything," and I have a new year-old bed started: it bloomed grandly but is in a lighter location than the old bed, so it's a little dry looking.

I know some phloxes are sheared, but I don't know that the wild kind should be. Advice? Thanks, ya'll.
