Area under oak trees

Thanks for all the support about being a newbie

I live in Upstate, SC. We have oak trees in both our front and back yard (they are not "live oak" trees-not sure what kind). The front yard faces south and the back north. All of these trees have roots that are very close to the top of the soil. You can see them. Is this normal?

Our soil is very rocky also. Actually it seems to be everything bad-rocky, clay, sandy, construction trash, roots, weeds.

Because we have had trouble growing grass we thought about bringing in topsoil.

Would this hurt the trees?

Would the top soil need to be tilled in and would this damage the trees?

Any ideas on the type of grass that would work since we have about ½ shade and ½ sun?
