Another oddity this year

Last year, several of the big rudbeckias that return from dropped seed had the odd issue of petals fused into a tube(they are not the tube-petalled variety). Very unattractive.

Now, some of the plants in a different border(rudbeckia again) the stems are fusing and rising to a tightly double headed flower. The buds, instead of round are eliptical, compressed to the other eliptical bud.

Last year, thinking it was a lack of calcium in the soil, I put down powdered lime (in January)and worked it into the top three inches of soil.

These oddballs are not unattractive but I wonder what mineral they lack that could be causing the twinning.

Ha..twinning..in the very same month that my twin grandbabies arrived. Wonder if seeds from these oddballs would reproduce to more twins?
