Yes, it prefers full sun (a little shade is probably okay) and dry soil.

Carla, Betsy Clebsh in her book, "The New Book of Salvias", recommends for S. nemorosa that they be planted in "a sunny position in the garden with well-draining, friable soil and moderate weekly water throughout the growing season." She also states that after the plants start to produce seed, they should be pruned back to two active leaf nodes to encourage branching and repeat blooming. She says that you can get 3 flowerings in a mild climate by following this method. She recommends taking cuttings for making new plants in late July or August.
