Shaded clay area

I Have an enclosed area appx 4' x 8' in my patio. It gets no direct sun and is solid clay. I would like some kind of evergreen groundcover to fill it in with. I tried Vinca minor last year but it didn't make it through the winter. Something flowering would be nice but something green and virtually maintenance free would be great as I do a lot of traveling.

Any help greatly appreciated!

thank you
