Question on Sweet Potato Planting

We're beginning to grow our own sweet potatoes at home, and I'd like to know if there's a way for us to avoid buying slips every year (or going to the supermarket for diy slips)?

Is there a way for us to save/preserve slips for use next year?

Also, if we plant slips now, and they're in the ground over the winter, does this mean that they will die over the winter and we won't have any harvest to show for next year?

I hope that's not too confusing.
