| I have a problem with my front yard - sun...a lot of sun. When we purchased our house, our front yard was treeless/shrub-less. Since moving in, we have planted 2 trees (1 maple and 1 crabapple) but the trees are still young and not providing much shade. The maple is about 7ft. now and the crabapple is about 5ft.
My biggest problem is that I want to plant some more shrubs and plants around the front of our house but I'm having a problem of finding plants that really love/tolerate a lot of sun. Our front yard gets full sun from about ~8am till sun down. We have planted some boxwoods and hollies which seem to enjoy all the sun exposure but a lilac (miss kim) that I planted early this spring was really struggling in all the sun (burnt leaves/ curling leaves/ etc). I have since transplanted the lilac to a new location (with some shade) and it is rebounding, thankfully. I also have dwarf firepower nandina planted near the front and they too are getting burnt by the summer sun! I use mulch around all my plants every year and water them regularly. Are there any plants/shrubs that you have tried or know of that truly enjoy full sun? |

| Crapemyrtles come in all colors and sizes from dwarf to tree size. They love the sun. Many of them have ornamental bark. |

| Katthor, Don't know what zone you are in. I am in zone 8, in SC. Roses, especially knock out roses do very well in my front yard which is all sun like yours. I have a crape myrtle tree, a chaste tree, (look up online, it is gorgeous!). Out back in the full sun I have cannas. They will get real big if you water them every 2 days and give them lots of sun. Wax myrtle is a very nice shrub or tree to grow that is evergreen for winter interest, sweet tea olive trees(they grow pretty slow) are pretty and evergreen in the winter, they bloom all fall and winter and early spring and smell soooo good. Well, that is what I have, the sun is wicked on some plants isn't it? Good luck to you! |

| My first thought was Knockout Roses, maybe yedda hawthorn or abelias. I love my Rose Creek abelias. They get sun most of the day but are shaded towards the later afternoon, so I can't say for sure how they would do for you. |

| Butterfly4u, Chaste tree huh? I saw some at a local big box store and considered it but I wanted to do more research into it before buying one. As for the cannas - those are intersting. They look tropical - I assume they die back in the winter? A lot of suggestions for roses so I think I'll give them a try! I like the suggestion of hawthorn bushes too. Thanks everyone for the suggestions! It's giving me a lot of help and ideas! :D |
