Colored Mulches

I'm interested in hearing how you all feel about the wood based mulches that are on the market these days. While I don't disagree that mulches are very useful for retaining moisture and supressing weeds and sometimes loosening soil, I'm concerned with what is being added to them. All of the wood-based ones I've seen in my area are not bark but are shredded wood with some kind of colorant added. Just what is in these colorants? Is it safe for eating if used with vegetable gardens? What about years from now - if I use it now for a perennial garden and then someone years from now uses the same spot for veggies, will it be a problem for them?
