Fritilaria Bulbs Success rate in Zone 8??

I really like the Crown Imperial Fritilaria. Since the bulbs are expensive I'd like to find out more about them. I know I have to chill the bulbs, how and where to plant them. What I need to know is are they worth it? What is their life span in zone 8? Do they multiply? Do you have any? And if so what can you tell me about them.

I've tried them off and on for years and I've never gotten them to survive over the summer and I've only gotten one to bloom and it was kinda misshapen. The bulbs, leaves and flowers smell awful - like a skunk.
