magic lily/spider lily.... let me look up the real name.. begins with an L. It's a bulb. The foliage comes at a totally different time and dies back, then the flower.

Lycoris radiata

Also known as Spider Lily - there is a white cultivar as well.

It will grow leaves, either after flowering or in the spring - I forget which for this species, and it depends on the climate also - and then the leaves die back in early summer, and the flower comes up, like magic, now/early fall. There is another Lycoris species (L. squamegera, with fatter, fragrant pink flowers) that is called Magic Lily, or also Naked Lady, because it also comes up without leaves.
