Trying to Identify a Tree or Bush??

One of my co-worker brought in what looked like a reddish/yellow cherry that had studs/spikes on it. The fruit was about an inch in diameter.She wanted me to identify it. I have no idea what it is. Do you? She said it came off of a tree, but you know sometimes unpruned bushes begin to look like trees after years of neglect. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
