Trombone Squash / Climbing Zucchini

Ralph Whisnant

Thanks to seeds from Triangle John, I am growing Trombone squash again this summer. I only kept 2 plants, but they are producing a couple of fruit per day each averaging 12 - 16 inches long. Each plant has made vines that are over 15 feet long with several branches on each, and new branches keep coming. I have them on tomato string 6 feet above the rest of the garden. While my yellow squash and regular zucchini plants are beginning to show signs of succumbing to borers and other diseases, these two plants show no signs of slowing down. My wife has made zucchini bread with them and we like it better than that she has made with regular zucchini. We also are grating and freezing them for soups next winter. The following article from Kathy's Garden even suggests that they can be allowed to mature and be used like a winter squash?
