That's a lovely suggestion.

Yeap, I had planned on donating to the food bank here but alas my garden didn't do what I had hoped it would and really didn't get anything out of it.
Squash, yes, lots of squash but I wanted to really do more.
Hopefully next year will be a lot better and I will have a lot to share with them then....

Some food pantry charities do not take fresh produce (they don't have cold storage), but plenty do. Most large cities have a drop off point for a program called "Grow a Row" or "Grow an extra row" started by the national Garden Writers Association. It encourages home gardeners to plant extra and share with local food banks. The Triangle has the Food Shuttle which not only has cold storage but refrigerated trucks and community gardens and gardening programs for various youth charities - all good. A popular drop off point for extra produce in downtown Raleigh is Logan's Trading Co. a garden center operated in the old train station beside Peace College. They even reward gardeners that donate certain amounts of food.

That was my normal route for getting rid of extra veggies - now the folks at the office where I work take anything and everything I bring in.
