| Hi. I am relatively new to the Carolinas and will be planting my first bulbs this year. I have done some research, but still wanted some advice.
I placed an order at Brent and Becky's bulbs, for tulips and daffodils. It is my understanding that daffodils don't need to be prechilled. Is this true? Regarding the tulips, I ordered some species ones and some appledorn ones. I know that these need to be prechilled. The problem is my processing date isn't until October 30, so by the time I get them, if I am to chill them, they won't get in the ground until mid-January. Will this be okay or should I try to have my processing date moved up? Thanks! |

| If you get them October 30 let nature chill them. Just plant them in the ground on October 30. That should be enough chilling time for them to grow for you. |

| Chilling is usually measured in hours and the amount needed can be different for different types of bulbs and even some different types of tulips - but generally, if you get things in the ground over Thanksgiving weekend you'll get the amount of chillings hours you need for good spring bloom. This is why when the entire rest of the world is sleeping off a turkey dinner in front of a football game on tv, I am outside digging in the dirt. |
