onions from seed; one more try

I've struggled to grow onions from seed and have tried it several times in the garden. My results have been very poor.

I know there are other ways to grow them, transplants and sets (I've tried the sets with mixed results) but I really want to master the direct seed outdoors method. It seems the easiest. I bought some Texas 1015Y seeds online and some material I found online suggests I can plant them outside in my area (central NC) in mid October. I planted them last night in my raised bed. The soil has plenty of organic matter mixed in, peat moss, grass clippings, composted chicken poo and some pine bark mulch. I plan on mulching with some fine compost when they get a few inches high to protect them from frost. If I understand it correctly, if I do everything right I can expect to harvest the onions around March or April. Is this correct? and if you can share any other tips and tricks I am all ears. Many thanks
