Will Daffodils grow in Myrtle Beach SC? [xpost]

This is my first year in Murrells Inlet (S of Myrtle Beach) SC and about 1 mile as the crow flies from the nearest coastal saltwater creek. I moved here from Connecticut. I want to plant daffodil bulbs this month. Two questions for local gardeners:
1. Does the high water table around here make growing bulbs in the ground impossible?
2. Does it get cold enough, long enough around here for daffodils to bloom in spring, or must I "force" them in the fridge?

Yes. Plant them. It gets cold enough.

I've planted them a lot closer to the marsh than that, in Beaufort, SC. Daffodils naturalize perfectly in the south. Thanksgiving was always a traditional time to plant spring bulbs, as I recall.

It's tulips and crocus that don't do well.

Congratulations on your move! Murrells Inlet is a great place.

And the best, most reliable daffodil for the deep south is the large blooming Carleton variety listed in every bulb catalog. A favorite old timer. There are acres of these beauties growing at a daffodil farm on St. Helena Island near Beaufort, SC. It sadly appeared to be in decline the last time I visited due to change of ownership.

A special place, Murrells Inlet, home of Brookgreen Gardens! And seafood fresh off the boats. You have found one of those special spots in the Carolinas to live. Enjoy!
