Coleus is an annual, and very sensitive to cold temps. In fact, a dip below 40 degrees will probably turn it to mush. I overwinter the coleus cultivars that I like by taking cuttings in the Fall before the temperature drops. They will root in water, or you can just stick them in some potting soil. I keep them in a sunny window all winter. Then, several weeks before the average last frost date, I take cuttings from the plant I overwintered and start a little mini farm of coleus. In a few weeks, they are ready to set out in the landscape.

As Spazzycat says, for the coleus, take cuttings, overwinter, and then take cuttings again. They are commonly available in the spring, once all frost danger is gone. If you see an new color combination or leaf shape, you might want to buy some - and some do very well in sun or in pots, and some don't (despite being sold as 'sun coleus'), so I try to take cuttings of the ones that did especially well - not all varieties are grown from year to year, who knows why.

For the impatiens, they CAN reseed, and then again, may not. You can hope, and be prepared to buy new ones, or you can take cuttings, the same for them as for the coleus.

Mindy, both are toast as soon as we have a heavy frost, but are easy to root in either soil or water. It is easier if you go ahead and place them in potting soil, water and enclose the pot and all in a plastic bag. I usually find both Impatiens and a few Coleus seedlings growing in pots of other stuff that I have brought in for the winter. By the way, Impatiens do well if dug up and potted and brought inside, but Coleus are much more difficult to keep alive as large plants. Cuttings are the way to go, just do not allow them to get below about 50 F, if you can avoid it. Also, keep both on the dry side during cold weather.
