Backyard Gardening During the Winter

Ralph Whisnant

Several people have expressed an interest in what can be

grown during cooler weather here in our area. Last Saturday the Raleigh News and Observer had an article, "Backyard Buffet", on the front page of the Home & Garden section about a lady in Cary, Ginger Zucchino, who holds down a full time job, gardens and is starting to teach classes to encourage more people to raise their own food. Her winter garden is an example of what can be done in this area, even if you have heavy shade in the summer. She covers her wire frames with plastic, but I find that row cover or shade cloth is all that I need most of the time and I only add plastic over top of the cloth if the temperature is going to be in the teens.
