My fave center is the latest victim of encroachment by the big box retailers..I'm off with a big list to fill hoping they will downscale and reopen elsewhere.

No plans to reopen elsewhere. It's pretty well picked clean already, sale started last Sat. Presold a lot of their fixtures. Still managed to get some good deals and filled the car up 2x. Still gobs of plant pots/planters and quite a few indoor plants. Some palm type plants and a couple of musa. Quite a few trees and shrubs and a lot of 2-3 gallon roses. I got some perennials, small skypencils and a couple of bluebeards. Three low spreading loropetalums, plant stands and a funky fountain. Wondering if they'll let customers dig up the shrubs and perennials in the display gardens but it was too busy to ask. Owner was happy, customers were sad.

I'm sorry one of your favorite plant spots is closing. But on the other hand, you seem happy with the plants and things you bought. Great idea to get a fountain, they are pricey! You have good taste in plants. it's a shame barnhardt that I didn't know you wanted a fig, the old man down the street was selling fig trees cheap about a month ago. I didn't get one, I know nothing about fig trees. Well, at least the owner was happy, that tells you something about the nursery business.

They were so well located to take advantage of the growth of upper Lancaster SC and all of south and western Union Cty plus the Ballantyne area of south Charlotte. But with growth of residential comes growth of commercial. Lowes had an impact when it opened a mile away and the site our developers found as alternative to WalMart building at the end of our road..WalMart agreed to the SC But when the occasional posting of someone interested in opening a garden center attracts my attention, I always say 'go forward to become a niche' a specialist and prepare to have to winter over a lot of perennials and know about plant care' That was the point when Youngs failed to slim their gift shop and slim their stock of ordinary annuals/shrubs and trees. They just bought as a reseller from wholesalers and

Sorry to hear about Young's. I wondered how long they could hold out against Lowe's. Just one of the reasons I hate the big box stores. I'm faced with a total "re-do" of all my beds this year so lots to do and lots to buy. Need plenty of advice as I have one green thumb and one black thumb. The lady at Sugar Creek Garden Center in Ft. Mill / Tega Cay is great to work. She knows her stuff and is getting several shrubs I wanted. They are a family owned business. Think they have been there for a couple of seasons. I like to use the small family / neighborhood businesses...seems they are a dieing breed. Here's a link that might be helpful.

Thank you summerz for giving me another alternate GC. Looks like a nice place and a thorough website but I always am concerned when family GCs are open year round. But, I'll take a ride over there soon and see if they can order some dahoon hollies for me. Surprised they didn't try and buy Young's mailing list.
