Fothergilla and deer

I'm thinking about planting a row of Fothergilla shrubs along the walkway leading to our front door, but that area of our yard sees fairly heavy deer traffic. I've seen Fothergilla on lists of deer resistant plants, but I was wondering if anyone has personal experience. Is Fothergilla worth trying in the presence of the antlered pests, or should I just settle for a row of Gardenias which I know are deer proof in our yard?
