When you do water, do you soak them thoroughly? Your sun conditions and temps are decent enough to require regular watering. I know you said you use a meter to gauge moisture, but how frequently are you watering now? Your containers are are only partially filled with soil and sand (based on the photo) and under indoor heating, can dry out fast.

i water them every 10-14 days. only for the fact that the moisture meter is barely at the 'dry' side at that time. in some instances (especially the lemon), is still moist/wet.

i read somewhere that you should start w/a smaller pot, then move up. i had already purchsed these larger pots and figure i'd use the bottom half. not to mention, i also drilled a decent amount of holes in the bottom to get good drainage.

today, i changed out all my soil and replaced it with citrus/cactus soil. hoping that helps.

Just to let you know, one commonly sold, commercial soil sold as, citrus/cactus mix is just, well, garbage...mostly peat moss, in fact. I mix up my own soils for the citrus, and though I do not personally use "gritty" mix, I do avoid peat-based mixes. Not only do they stay WET too long, if you put your plants outside (mine spend most of the year outside), the peat bakes in the sun and resists any retention of water! Been there, done that.

would be curious to know what your typical soil mix is comprised of...anything you'd be keen to share?

It is a lengthy read but gives you everything you need to make the mix and have your citrus thrive in containers. Also you could do a search on the forum for 5-1-1 or gritty and get tons and tons of good info about potting medium and fertilizing schedules for potted citrus. Hope this helps!
