container fertilizer

Hi all

Got my first citrus tree -- a container Mexican lime. It came with a few limes on it, has a few more growing in, and seems to have green shoots. I think it's doing ok.

The issue is this: I got the tree for Christmas; my wife bought it 1.5 months before that day and kept it at the nursery. I have no idea when the nursery last fertilized it -- it has what looks to be the small, slow release pellets on top. They told me that they give the trees regular fertilizer, but my tree was put to the side after my wife bought it, so I'm not sure (nor was the owner) whether it would have gotten some near Christmas.

I'm curious to know when you think it might be safe to start giving it regular doses of fertilizer. I obviously don't want to burn the roots.

Thanks!
