Help with Mandarin tree

Hi Guys,

I am new to gardening - was inspired when I was given my first lime tree just over a few months ago and now have lime, lemon, and mandarin.

A neighbor of mine gave me their mandarin that had seriously neglected over the course of some 10 years (possibly more) The tree was left in almost full shade and poor soil for most of its life.

Attached is a picture of it, Sorry its hard to see everything Im about to explain from the quality of the pic

I transplanted it into my yard with reasonable quality soil, and plenty of sun.

From the base of the tree, the left side brand appears mostly dead, and has no life on it. (this is the one sticking straight up, probably 3ft from the base)

The right side still has a thin branch with leaves that have stayed green. Its been 3 weeks since transplanting and there has been little to no new growth.

(please note the leaves look like they have brown spots its just soil from the digging process)

So my question is, do you think this will survive? Should i trim the tree back? Fertilise?

I am in Sydney Australia so we are right in the middle of our summer.

Any help would be much appreciated.
