Humidity

I live in NJ, so our winters are pretty cold and dry. How important is humidity in the winter? I have read on some sites that humidifiers are necessary or spraying mist is important. How important is this if I keep my dwarf trees in my house in winter?

I guess what I'm saying is this: I have heard conflicting information online and on this site. Some say, it is ok for your trees to get cold as long as it doesn't get below 40. Putting them inside somewhere for winter with no south-facing windows isn't a problem, the tree will just go dormant, they need humidity that you can't get inside, even a garage is fine.

Other say, you can keep your tree in your house in a sunny location and mist occasionally. The tree doesn't need to go dormant and winter temps in the 70's are fine.

I'm really confused...
