There are many different lemon varieties! Have you looked at Four Winds growers website? They have quite a few different lemon varieties. That might give your friend a few different starting points. Personally, I've never tasted any other lemon than a Meyer and a eureka (that's the name of the common grocery store lemon). I love both! If you prefer smaller lemons, don't get a Ponderosa lemon! :)

If you don't want to wait long, it's best to buy a grafted tree that is a few years old. Four winds specializes in grafted citrus trees. (I'm not a sales rep for these guys I swear! Haha) I bought a kaffir lime tree from them and it was very healthy and impressive!

If you can find one, a Lisbon Lemon tree would be nice. New growth and blooms are purple so ladies always appreciate them.

The most common lemons in the world (lemon, meaning yellow) are the ELB varieties (Eureka, Lisbon, Berna); most consumers cannot or do not distinguish among them.
Eureka is the majority of Argentina's crop; Berna most of Spain's crop; and California's crop is mostly Eureka and Lisbon, although Sunkist is now beginning to promote the Meyer. I believe, but I am not certain, that with the same care the Eureka will give you more lemons but smaller size fruit than the Lisbon; I think that is why there is a trend toward planting Lisbons in California.
