what i've read is that you can tie the top down and one of the lateral buds will take over as the leader and once it's several inches long you cut off the old lead and it'll fruit a few years earlier than if you just let it grow naturally.

Yes, I would top all three vertical shoots to encourage lateral branching. And almost all citrus are self-fertile, or are parthenocarpic - produce fruit without the need for fertilization. And most citrus are also self-fertile (if pollination improves fruit set). Limes are most definitely parethenocarpic. The only citrus I am aware of that needs cross pollination to set fruit to improve fruit set are Minneola tangelo, clementine, Nova, Orlando, Robinson, and Sunburst mandarins.

Thank you both for the input. Houston, I planted 5 seeds, then thinned to the strongest 3. Patty S., thanks for the info re: fertility & pruning to encourage lateral branching. As with any new venture, it's now time to do my homework...Garden Web is always a good starting point!
