If its the Miracle Grow version, avoid it. Its mostly peat with a little perlite and sand. I had my Meyer Lemon in that stuff for about a month and nearly killed the tree. I'd recommend 5-1-1 mix, if you do a search on the forum for it you'll get a lot of good info on how to make it. It sounds like you have the right idea though with perlite and the commercial potting soil. If its working for you, I'd say you're ok. They key is something that doesn't retain too much moisture and is free draining. Why are you looking to repot? Is your tree suffering, or is it just time to pot up?

New to the citrus world. they are pretty tight in the 1 gallon containers, waiting for the warmer weather to repot so they will go directly out side, oh i used Vermiculite 1 year ago, lost 1 orange tree, trying to revive my other with perlite 75-80 degrees bottom heat high output growing lights when the days are cloudy, get a lot of that here in MI

You are right. That stuff is the worst, even with extra perlite.

Gobluedog...Don't forget that citrus do much better with a drop in the root zone by ten or more degrees between night and day. By nature, days rae much warmer than night which iads in photosenthesis.
