potted lemon tree

I have a lemon tree in a large pot and some of the older leaves are getting brown tips and the new leaves re getting leaf curl. Also the tree hasn't been repotted since being placed in the pot about 6 years ago,when would the best time of year to cut back the roots and repot. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated please?
