Citrus rootstock's effect on taste

Does anyone know what would be a common rootstock for Washington Navel used back in about the 1950's in California?
I have an old Washington Navel orange tree that was probably planted sometime in that decade.
It's full sized, not dwarf, and it makes incredibly delicious fruit. Very sweet, but what makes it different is it's very rich, a very full flavor, almost like artificial orange flavor. Everyone who's tasted it says it's nothing like they've ever had before, not from the grocery or from contemporary home grown trees.
I read somewhere that various rootstocks can make a difference in flavor depth of the sion fruit. Is this true, and if so, what would have been the most popular rootstock for citrus at that time? I really would love to know. Thanks for any info.
