well air pruning is really just allowing the roots to grow out though small holes and they basically prune themselves and grow more smaller roots. In your hot summers it will be hard for you to over water. Not impossible but hard. You will want to be sure your pots are shaded or a light color as hot roots shut down just as cold roots will. In your zone cant you plant it in the ground. That would be ideal for you area.

We lived in the Southern California low desert, and I used those air, root pruning pots for many plants. I didn't use them for citrus because I learned about them after the citrus were potted in large pots.

They work great! I could not believe the amount of roots inside the air pots when repotting plants, and the poor hard root bound citrus in regular pots.

If you do it, use well drained soil. Al made up a special gritty mix just for the hot desert (at my request). All my pots were on a drip system and they loved those air pruning pots!

Here it is:

For 100+ degree Desert Heat:
4 parts Turface
3 parts bark
2 parts crushed Gran I Grit (Grower Size) or #2 cherrystone
1 part vermiculite
Plant a little high, and after the planting is established, mulch heavily with crushed granite.
