Avacado tree wilting and turning black

My neighbor planted this avacado tree earlier this spring. It was doing wonderful until last week. No harsh weather came thru. I'm pretty sure they bought it at Home Depot; went straight into the ground. It appears the limbs are turning black, and anywhere after that blackness the leaves wilted; starting from the top down it looks like. The lower branches are still looking good. Any suggestions? I don't believe they fertilized the tree yet, so I doubt it's overfed. Hopefully they watered it regularly, since we've been dry for a couple weeks, but like I mentioned, it was groing beautifully for the past few months.

Please ask any questions and i'll get back within the string.
