fruit trees in heavy clay soil

Hi, I need some help. I have planted around 40 fruit trees in a Point Cook, Victorian, suburban garden, close to the bay, bought from a local nursery, about 1.5 meters tall, 2 years ago, different apples, plums, citruses, loquats, cherry, fig, peaches, apricots, red currants, black currants. This autumn had a professional tree pruner, do pruning, and he said quite a few trees were suffering from some kind of stress. It seems that the original holes I dug were no big enough for the roots to develop, as we have very heavy clay soil, and the watering i do is not able to get away from roots. I am asking that if i got a post hole digger, and dug 20cm wide holes by 1 meter deep around trees, would this help to allow the roots to expand out of original20cm hole, and also the water to drain better? Also i could add back, fertiliser, and or compost, or mulch. Any suggestions please???
thanks
Andrew
