Broken branches from wind

I have several trees that suffered broken branches in some recent storms. The branches are just hanging and I am going to be getting them off tomorrow. Some of the areas will have new exposed areas that are several inches long. Do I need to be concerned about any adverse infections or other probelms. I will be using sterilized clippers.

Just be sure to cut the branches to an outward growing branch and don't leave awkward stubs, which can rot.

If cutting branches back to the main stem, be sure to make your cuts outside the branch collar.

Don't use anything on the cuts. You can spray your pruners with alcohol between cuts but it's debatable about how much good that does.

If you're concerned about cleaning your pruners between trees, you're better off using a 1:10 bleach to water solution. We have a saying in nursing about isopropyl alcohol, "good for moving the germs around." Bleach will kill bacteria and viruses. Rubbing alcohol not so much.
