Something is eating my blood orange tree

I was hoping someone can help me. Something has been eating my tree, so now there is a top part with leaves and a bottom part - with the middle not having any stems/leaves.

The tree was planted about 7 years ago, is about 10 feet high, and has never produced any oranges. This year I finally had some blooms - and i finally have 1 (one) orange growing on it!

I tried to see what could be eating it, and I found some snails on the tree - could this be what is eating the stems?

Can anyone suggest something to spray on the tree to prevent this from being eaten?

Can I in the future - cut the tree down halfway? Or should I just face the fact that I am going to have a bald spot in the middle??
